Ideas for Roof Designs from Prestige Roof Lanterns UK

Roof designs are not always a hot topic in home improvement magazines or the most noticeable design element when you first visit a property. That said, a well-designed roof actually makes a substantial difference to the value, comfort and general life of a property. Ultimately, roofs need to be weather-proof, solid and durable and are an absolute essential factor in everyone’s home.

You can also have a bit of fun considering roof designs. At Prestige Roof Lanterns UK, we have a range of roof lanterns, roof lights and skylights that can really make a difference to your home.

39

Roof Design Idea 1: A Flat Roof Skylight.

Ultimately, a flat roof skylight is a window in the roof that allows a large amount of natural light into your property.

A flat roof skylight is a great, simple element of a roof design that can make a huge difference to the atmosphere within your home.

If you are looking for one of the more straight-forward roof designs, and an increased amount of natural light in your home, then installing a flat roof skylight should definitely be a consideration.

Roof Design Idea 2: Curved or Domed Roof Lanterns.

Curved roof lanterns work particularly well in prestigious properties looking for an added element of grandeur.

A prestige curved roof lantern is the ultimate in luxurious living and provides a central feature made of timber and glass. Not only will this add light and elegance to any room, it will emphasise the brightness and open space within the property.

A domed or curved roof lantern is often larger than a skylight and the curved shape reflects even more natural light into the room than a flat roof light. A curved or domed roof lantern is therefore perfect for those homeowners that are looking for the maximum amount of sunlight to enter their properties.

Roof Design Idea 3: Bespoke Roof Lanterns

“A bespoke roof lantern from Prestige Roof Lanterns is pretty much what it says on the tin “Bespoke”. We turn your idea into reality, using a combination of highly skilled processes.”

Bespoke roof lanterns from Prestige Roof Lanterns UK really do offer the opportunity for everyone to decide upon the perfect roof lantern for their property. Whether you are looking for a small roof lantern installed above a dining room table or a large, domed roof lantern for a traditional hardwood orangery, the bespoke roof lanterns from Prestige Roof Lanterns UK make an excellent feature that can be used in a number of roof designs.

We offer all our customers the opportunity to customise every aspect of their roof lantern, from its dimensions to its shape, colour and height.

Choosing your Roof Windows

The term roof window is a very broad term. Here at Roof Lanterns UK, we manufacture a number of bespoke roof lanterns, roof lights, skylights and domed roof lights to suit your requirements. Firstly, you should consider why you are looking at roof windows. Whether it is a roof window for a loft conversion, your original roof or the roof of a conservatory or orangery extension, here at Prestige Roof Lanterns UK, we can help you find the perfect roof lantern.

Types of Roof Windows

Roof Lights or Skylights

Skylights, also known as roof lights, allow a fair amount of natural light into the room and can often be seen to be a cost-effective option for a roof window.

Skylights are generally inexpensive to install. At Prestige Roof Lanterns UK, our skylights come in a range of configurations (size, colour, design etc.) and we offer a free quotation based on the requirements for your roof window.

Skylights are a type of roof window that allow natural light into your property, but are actually very different to roof lanterns and are much smaller. At Prestige Roof Lanterns UK, we generally do not manufacture skylights smaller than 500 x 500.

At Prestige Roof Lanterns UK, we design, fabricate and supply beautiful, high-quality roof lights to home owners, businesses and trades people around the UK. Our products are engineered using high-quality components to give that prestige look and feel.

Roof Lanterns

A roof lantern makes a luxury addition to your property, and is generally much larger and grander than a roof light or skylight. You could argue that roof lanterns aren’t really a roof window because, they don’t always feature an opening. That said, the sheet amount of light that a roof lantern allows into your property means that they definitely do come under the term ‘roof window’.

At Prestige Roof Lanterns UK, we have a wider range of hardwood roof lanterns available.  Timber roof lanterns are one of the most popular choices for roof lanterns, due in part to the strength and appearance of timber as well as the cost. Timber is one of the cheaper hardwoods but still of very good quality.

Here at Prestige Roof Lanterns we use the finest handpicked timbers to use in the joinery to manufacture a product to high standards.

The Health Benefits of Natural Light from Your Skylight Windows

“Let the natural light into your home with a skylight window”

Posted by: Laura Wakeham. on the 30th September 2015

Natural light is thought to be a healthy alternative to artificial light and, therefore, skylight windows should be a healthy addition to any home. But what are the benefits of natural light and how can it benefit the human body?

Here are 5 health benefits of natural light from your skylight windows:

1. Natural light increases productivity and efficiency.
Natural light is an energizing property and recent studies suggest it boosts both productivity and work performance. Although these studies refer to natural light in the office, undoubtedly natural light in the home must also have a similar effect. So, perhaps your skylight windows can help you work harder.

2. Natural light provides the human body with a boost of Vitamin D.
The main source of vitamin D is, in fact, sunlight and is integral to our body’s function. Although we can also receive vitamin D from our diet, skylight windows in the home could potentially help regulate our vitamin D levels, particularly in the winter when the weather is more changeable and we tend to have less daylight.

3. Daylight makes you feel happier.
It is proven that sunlight makes you feel happier. Perhaps then, skylight windows could help you feel happier by bringing more natural light into your home!

4. Natural Light could potentially offer less financial stress.
Having more natural light in the home, may mean you use less artificial light, and will therefore reduce your electricity bill. Perhaps then skylight windows can slightly reduce your financial stress too!

5. Natural light has a huge effect on many aspects of the human physiology.
Above all, daylight spurs on the human body clock and it is important to receive appropriate levels of light at different times of the day. In the morning, brighter light wakes us up and gives us energy, while at night, dimmer light cues us to fall asleep.
It is clear then that natural light has a huge effect on our lifestyle. If you, for example, receive natural light from your skylight windows in the morning, you are likely to feel energized and ready for the day ahead.

The Advantages of Natural Light vs Artificial Light

“What is the difference between a roof light and lantern?”

Posted by: Laura Wakeham. on the 30th July 2015

Roof lanterns and skylights are usually installed to provide natural light in the home. Not only is daylight cheaper than artificial lighting (after all, it’s completely free!), natural light is an unlimited resource. Although we need synthetic lighting and cannot eliminate its use completely, the installation of roof lanterns and skylights can help reduce the requirement of artificial light, as well as help reduce CO2 emissions and protect our planet.

The Benefits of Natural Light
Daylight improves our mood

Most of us have heard of, or even suffered from, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which is a type of depression known as “winter depression”. It is caused primarily by a reduced exposure to sunlight. Ultimately, when the days get shorter and people see less daylight, their energy levels decrease and their mood drops. Therefore, the daylight received within our homes from roof lanterns and skylights could lift our mood and make us happier!

Environmental benefits

Artificial lighting is powered by electricity which is generated in nuclear power stations. The process of producing electricity causes harm to the environment because it releases harmful chemical emissions, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon and mercury.

It is well known that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and causes global warming which will vastly alter the world’s climate. In addition, sulfur dioxide emissions have been connected to heart disease and respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchoconstriction, while mercury can settle into water bodies and affect water quality.

By installing roof lanterns or skylights and, therefore, reducing our use of electric lighting, we can minimise harmful chemical emissions and actively help the planet!

Daylight increases productivity

Whether or not you believe this, daylight can actually increase our productivity and make us more alert. Apparently, light influences the amount of melatonin in the body, which is a hormone found naturally in the body that regulates night and day cycles. While darkness causes our bodies to produce more melatonin and prepares us for sleep, light decreases the body’s production of melatonin and prepares us for being awake!
Since daylight is much brighter than artificial light, it has a greater influence on our bodies. Apparently, daylight produces about 1000-2000 lux, while electric lighting produces 200-300 lux (lux is the unit of illuminance).

Therefore, a roof lantern or skylight in the home gives us the opportunity to receive daylight first thing in the morning, when our body absorbs most light. So, hopefully, we’ll feel more awake than those who sit under artificial light at the breakfast table!
